Savings Tip Number 15, Check!

January 29, 2009
The first comment I ever got on this blog was from my sister, Steph.  She included a link to this Business Week article called “Twenty-Five Ways to Save More Each Month”.  Some of the ways to save seem easier than others, but some are ways that my family is already taking advantage of.  Check out Number 15 for example…..

In the past month or so, we’ve gotten three different concert tickets free!!  It makes for a pretty inexpensive date.  On Friday night, we got to see (what I consider) a big name country band.

This is it! Check out the sign for who we saw...

This is it! Check out the sign for who we saw...

And here we are enjoying our free tickets!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more free tickets soon!

Publix Trip

January 25, 2009

Today’s run to Publix was another fun trip!!  It turned out to be more about household products than food…  but that’s ok.  We’ve got a lot of food around here, it’s about time we start eating it!  (As a tangent – I am thinking about joining in on the “Menu Planning Monday” fun as a kick-start to getting us to eat at home.  We always do better about eating at home when we have a plan in writing.)
I was super-excited to get stainless steel appliance wipes and cook top wipes for Buy one get one free.  We are almost out of both, and those suckers are expensive!  Even at Wal-Mart.  And I don’t ever remember seeing coupons for them.  The mystery 1 cent item was a roll of paper towels.  They’ll come in handy with the $0.45 bottle of Fantastik!  And I got 3 tubes of Aquafresh toothpaste…  We now have 7 tubes of toothpaste in our stockpile at home!  Time to stop!  On to the details:

Kroger Mega Sale – Trip #2

January 24, 2009

Today my  husband and I made another trip to Kroger to see if we could get some free Green Giant Steamers.  We were heading home from running some errands, so we hedged our bets and stopped at the first Kroger we came to.  That way, if they were out, we would pass two more Krogers on the way home where we could stop, if we needed to.  Luckily the first Kroger was completely stocked with Steamers.  Also included in the picture below are four of the Johnson’s Soap Buddies.  We picked those up at WalMart for a credit of 12 cents!  We have 3 nieces and a nephew to pass them along to.  On to the good stuff:

Kroger Streak – Consider it BROKEN!

January 22, 2009

I think the title says it all…..  I went to Kroger last night and for the first time that I can remember, I saved more than I spent!  I took advantage of the “Buy 10 items, get $5 off” sale they have going on now.  I was really looking forward to stocking up on the Green Giant Steamers that were going to be FREE.  Unfortunately, everyone in my area must have been too!  The frozen food section was wiped out (Kroger frozen veggies are 88 cents right now).  Even though I brought my list from home with all my corresponding coupons, it still took me a few minutes to reconfigure what I was going to buy to maximize my savings…  what a bummer!  I’m planning to try Kroger again on Saturday to try to get those free steamers.  (I just noticed the Diet Cokes are upside down, ooops!)

Edited:  We now have enough OJ for Sunday brunches until mid-March!  That’s what the OJ is dated….  Without the whole family helping to drink it, I think we’d be in trouble!!

Edited squared:  WOW!  I am in AWE of Jenny at Southern Savers!  Look at her Friday Finals, especially at Kroger.  WOW!

Kroger Sales

January 20, 2009

I don’t usually save as much during my shopping trips to Kroger as I do at Publix.  This may just be the week to break that streak.

Check out all these great deals at Kroger listed out over at Southern Savers!

I am totally going to take Jenny’s advice and copy her list into Word to edit it into my very own shopping list.  I have had great luck with the Kroger ShortCuts and P&G loadable coupons.  Cellfire on the other hand?  No way.  I’m in the process of scanning my receipt and UPC to e-mail them to get $1 back that didn’t work!  What a hassle.  This was the 3rd time a coupon didn’t work like it was supposed to.  I decided this time I was calling them on it.  I’ll keep you posted.  (Wow, that was a tangent…)

If you end up at Kroger this week and you get some good deals, report back and let me know!

Brand Name Loyalty

January 17, 2009

There are a handful of household items that my family is definitely brand name loyal to.  For example:

– Coke:  And I do mean Coca-Cola.  We conducted a week long experiment where we tried a handful of different generic sodas:  Aldi, WalMart, Publix.  We just couldn’t do it.  Being from the south, nothing tastes as good as the real thing.  Coke is the only way we can go.  We do collect coke reward points to redeem for coupons and we watch the sales to stockpile when it’s a good price.

–   Shampoo:  My husband will only use Head and Shoulders.  Not a huge deal, but that stuff can be expensive!!  I am always on the lookout for coupons.  On the other hand, I don’t care what type of shampoo that I use.  I was able to take advantage of some clearance shampoo at Kroger last week.  By combining the clearance prices with coupons, I was able to get 4 bottles of shampoo (Garnier Fructris and Suave) for $1.70.

– Orange Juice:  OJ is less about brand and more about type.  I guess I am an OJ snob.  Blame it on all the long days in Florida…  I just can’t drink “from concentrate” juice.  I have to have “not from concentrate.”

Most everything else, we are open to whatever is the best deal.  From toothpaste, to toilet paper, to fruit juice, to canned veggies…  if it’s cheap, we’ll try it!

In our experience, we have had really good luck with Aldi brand items.  Although, since I’ve started really watching the weekly sales and collecting the corresponding coupons, I’ve been able to buy name brand items for less than Aldi prices.

Inspirational Savers – Nicey Nash Style

January 17, 2009

Has anyone ever seen the show Clean House on the Style network?  I love the hostess, Nicey Nash.  She cracks me up with all of her antics.  As part of the beginning of the show, Nicey always says the same script to introduce the other cast members (the ones that actually do the work) to the viewers.  So, in the spirit of Nicey Nash, here’s the intro into my world of savings…..

“People always ask me, Binky, how do you do all that you?  Uhn, you know I don’t do it alone!

I’ve got Fiddledeedee! , the Queen of Club Pub
I’ve got Money Saving Mom, the Finder of Great Deals
My go to source for coupon insert previews Taylortown Coupon Preview
I’ve got Mommy Snacks for good deal “snacking”
I’ve got Southern Savers, the Reporter of Southern Deals and Frugal Steals
And last, but certainly not least….
My go to source for up to the minute deals The Thrifty Mama

I searched and searched for a video clip of Nicey doing her intro thing, but I just couldn’t find one to link to.

Does anyone have other favorite money saving sites that they enjoy?  I’m always on the lookout for more sites to read….  Please share!

Publix Super Savers #1

January 13, 2009

This is the first Publix Super Savers that I have actively participated in…  I look forward to seeing all the links every week, so I started a blog just so I could show off my savings too!  Crazy, I know!  I am a week behind, but here goes:

publix-super-savers-1

I spent $8.11 on everything shown above and I saved $20.48!

I am ashamed to admit that the tortillas were not on sale and I did not have a coupon for them.  But I really needed them for breakfast burritos for Sunday brunch.  The $3/ $15 CVS coupon that I used totally made up for it though.  Once I get the hang of this whole blogging thing, I might start listing out everything that I bought, the coupons that I used, and how much everything ended up costing.  We’ll see…
